Discuss and confirm understanding of adjectives and the corresponding nouns in the class for about half an hour. A List (incomplete) of adjectives for one single session can be something-like this-

Now  initiate a "What" question making session. Explain to the class how they would practice among peers-  forming `Wh' questions and respective the answers, following a defined structure but different pronouns, grammatical persons, and auxiliary verbs.

A: What are you when you have grace?

B: I'm graceful.

A: What are they when they've diligence?

B: They're diligent.

A: What is Maya when she has courage?

B: She's courageous.

A: What is a thought, when it has creativity?

B: It's creative.

.....and so on...........

Make sure that they practice the right auxiliaries and modals (like am,is,are; have,has)

Laying off

Recessions lead to a huge increase in redundancies. Who is selected for
redundancy? Are the criteria for selection always the same?
Fill each of the blanks in the following text. Use one word only in each space.

Personnel managers and directors are having change their ideas on how to handle redundancy as their are forced into losing more and more . In a recent UK survey, personnel practitioners asked whether they had made changes the criteria used when selecting people to be laid . Although no business or industry can have untouched by the recession, only eight per cent of the practitioners that they had made any changes. Those who have are now taking employees' attitudes, attendance and commitment consideration, as well as their ability. Some are being forced use compulsory redundancy for the first time. In the past, offering redundancy a retirement package was always the preferred option. Now young workers are targeted. More flexible staff are being retained.

The oldest medium for advertising is outdoor advertising, which can be on hoardings, underground stations etc. This form of is much cheaper than television advertising in terms of how many people it can  for a certain price. The owners of outdoor advertising in Britain are now in big business. It is longer specialist companies, owned by advertising agencies, who  all the selling. Some owners have bought up some the specialist companies themselves. The market is now segmented. Active listening

Watching and listening play a big part in effective communication. The goal of active listening is to understand not just the words a person says but the meaning or point of view the person is trying to get across.

Timing and setting:

Some settings make communicating easier, just as certain times seem to be better than others. Be sensitive to potential problems and eliminate distractions by choosing the right time & place. For instance when calling on someone important over the mobile we must reconsider the time of the day, and also instinctively go to a corner which is less noisy and has good network coverage

Effective self-expression:

Be sensitive to your own style of communicating. Take note of how you say things. Are you saying what you really mean? Are you saying it clearly and simply?

Lets Get UP & Running

What's up with ‘UP’!

There is a two-letter word in English that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that word is “up.”

It is listed in the dictionary as being used as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It’s easy to understand ‘up', meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake ‘up'?

At a meeting, why does a topic come up? Why do we speak up, and why are the officers up for election, and why is it up to the secretary to write up a report?

We call up our friends and we use up the opportunity to brighten up our home, after the party is up we warm up the leftovers and clean up the kitchen. We were once locked up in the house, it was Pooja who had messed up and forgotten the keys at her’s cousin’s place uptown. Some guy who’d come to fix up the old car, rescued us from the holdup.

At other times the little word has a real special meaning. People stir up trouble, line up for tickets, work up an appetite, think up excuses, make up for a loss, ….

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed up is special.

And this up is confusing:

A drain must be opened up because it is stopped up.

We open up a store in the morning but we close it up at night. We seem to be pretty mixed up about up!

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of 'up' look the word up in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes up almost 1/4 of the page and can add up to about thirty definitions.

If you are up to it, you might try building up a list of the many ways up is used. It will take up a lot of your time, but if you don’t give up, you may wind up with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding up. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing up. When it rains, it wets up the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry up.

One could go on & on, but I’ll wrap it up, for now …my time is up, so time to shut UP!
